Say, “I do not find in what has been revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it, unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine – for indeed, it is impure – or it be disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing, then indeed, your Lord is Forgiving and Most Merciful.” And to those who are Jews We prohibited every animal of claws (uncloven hoofs) and of the cattle and the sheep We prohibited to them their fat, except what their backs carry or the entrails or what is joined with bone. That is the recompense of their transgression. And indeed, We are truthful. But if they deny you, [O Muḥammad], say, “Your Lord is the possessor of vast mercy; but the people who are criminals will not avert His wrath.”
